Ruby came to live with us on the 7th March 2004, the day after Oliver’s 15th birthday. Although she was the whole families pet, she spent a lot of time with Oliver who was pretty much her best buddy.
Ruby was with us through until the 29th July, 2015. She lived in our family home in Bartlett Grove in Tawa and then moved with Debra and myself to our Matarawa cottage in the Wairarapa.
Archie, Debra’s Bichon/Poodle came to live with us in August, 2009 and the two dogs became inseparable.
Ruby’s early years at Bartlett Grove were surrounded by all the activities and coming and goings of our four children and all their friends.
At Matarawa she loved all the space and especially loved going for long walks.
She spent a lot of time in the orchard following me around as I mowed the paddock and when the kererū native birds were around, she would race up and down the paddock as they swooped from tree to tree.
Ruby’s greatest love in life was chasing imaginary shadows and she persevered in this occupation right up until her last week with us. She never did catch a shadow but left an awful lot of holes in the lawn trying to dig them up.
Ruby was a very active and vocal dog. Any unknown visitors were presented with a good barking off before Ruby allowed them to enter.
Once she got to know you, she was very happy to have a cuddle and any patting was received with pleasure.
Ruby loved sleeping and spent many nights over the years curled up on Oliver’s and Peter’s beds. She was happy to use anyone sitting on the couch as a comfy pillow for herself to go off to dreamland.
In 2015 we sold our Matarawa property and moved back to Tawa. Ruby settled there was us for what was to be her last few months with us before going off to chase shadows in heaven. RIP Ruby. You bought so much pleasure to our family.
